Shenandoah, I long ter hear yer
Ch.  Away, you rollin' river!
O Shenandoah, I cain't git near yer,
Ch. Away, I'm bound away, 'Cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter,
Ch.  Away, you rollin' river!
Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Ch. Away, I'm bound away, 'Cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you,
Ch.  Away, you rollin' river!
Oh, Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you
Ch. Away, I'm bound away, 'Cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Ch.  Away, you rollin' river!
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you
Ch. Away, I'm bound away, 'Cross the wide Missouri.

This is a lament from a love-sick European in love with an Oneida Chief's daughter, Shenandoah.  The chief (whose name may also be Shenandoah, curiously) has refused the hand of his daughter to the trader, only to be seduced by drink from a passing ship's captain who stole Shenandoah away, as is played out in longer, sadder versions.
